Our initiatives for sustainable agriculture
1. Sheep for natural weed control
Every spring, the ewes (and their lambs) make themselves at home on our plots. Thanks to their presence, we have eliminated the use of weedkillers whilst naturally enriching the soil. A valuable partnership… and a charming one at that!
2. Ultra-local fertilisers to nourish the soil
To enrich the soil, we use horse manure from the Espinette stud farm, located just 1.7 km from the estate. This simple, local alternative ensures the soil is nourished with high-quality organic matter.
3. Bees to boost biodiversity
We are delighted to welcome a beekeeper and his hives to the estate. Bees play a crucial role in pollination and contribute to the richness of the local ecosystem. Their presence is a source of pride for us and a valuable asset.
4. Uncultivated areas to preserve flora and fauna
We ensure that we maintain uncultivated areas which serve as refuges for flora and fauna. Hedgerows, woodland, scrubland, lake, vegetation allowed to grow between the rows of vines: each of these elements contributes to a natural balance that preserves the terroir. Cabran is home to over 200 animal species, including (1):
- 43 protected species
- 1 critically endangered species
- 3 endangered species
- 6 vulnerable species
5. An organic label as proof
Our ‘Organic Farming’ label certifies that we exclude all synthetic chemicals, fertilisers and pesticides. The complementary HVE certification attests to our sustainable management of water, biodiversity and farming practices (see our article https://chateaudecabran.com/fr/blog-et-evenements/post/9-quest-ce-que-la-certification-hve-) (see our article https://chateaudecabran.com/fr/blog-et-evenements/post/9-quest-ce-que-la-certification-hve-)
